Seasonal Fruit: Tangerine

Tangerine fruit

Tangerine, Citrus tangerina, is a citrus fruit from the mandarin variety. It is one of the fruits in season around late September to October in Nigeria.

While oranges are more popular, tangerines are said to be sweeter and stronger in flavor. Tangerine, like other citrus fruits is known for its Vitamin C Content.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant; it prevents damage caused by free radicals which can damage your DNA. Vitamin C helps in the healing of wounds, repairing and maintenance of the body; and keeping you younger. It also helps to boost your immunity and it is associated with disease prevention.

Tangerines are also a good source of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is micronutrient associated with immunity, eye health and general growth and development. Remember also that Vitamin A deficiency is one of the threatening micronutrient deficiencies we have in Nigeria and it would be good to ensure that our children and ourselves are getting enough of it from our foods as much as possible.
